O grupo de íons-pesados relativísticos do IFUSP, com apoio do projeto EPLANET, realizará o I Workshop de Computação de Alto Desempenho USP-CERN, recebendo o Dr. Benedikt Hegner, pesquisador do grupo SFT (Software Development For Experiments), especializado no desenvolvimento de software para experimentos de física de altas energias. O Dr. Hegner ministrará palestras e coordenará atividades práticas no IFUSP, entre os dias 16 e 25 de outubro. O  SFT é o grupo do CERN que desenvolve ferramentas computacionais amplamente conhecidas, como o ROOT e o GEANT.

Os temas abordados neste encontro serão:

  1. Ferramentas e técnicas de programação
  2. Arquitetura de software em sistemas de muitos cores
  3. Programação paralela

Cada tema pode ser acompanhado de maneira independente. Segue uma breve descrição dos objetivos e conteúdo do workshop:

Even though the miniaturization of transistors on chips continues like predicted by Moore's law, computer hardware starts to face scaling issues, so-called performance 'walls'. Probably, the best known is the 'power wall', which limits clock frequencies. The best way of increasing processor performance remains now to integrate many cores in the same chip. In addition, vector units become again standard. In order to avoid wasting the available resources, application developers in high energy physics are forced to re-think their ways of software design. This however requires a thorough knowledge of the concepts behind various parallelization methodologies.
 
This workshop will try to give a quick start into parallel software design and consists of three major parts. The first will give an introduction into the basic tools of software development. The second will address the software design of high-energy physics software and how it is being challenged by modern CPU architectures. Finally, the third part will cover hands-on sessions in parallel software development.

Título: Physics Software Development at CERN - from data taking and simulation to the final physics result

Resumo: Data mining applications like ROOT or simulation toolkits like Geant4 play an essential role in high energy physics research. But how are these actually being developed? What are the technical and organizational challenges being faced in projects of many million lines of code? And how does CERN assist and participate in this particle physics community effort? This presentation will try to shed some light on these questions and give an outlook of future projects bringing the field forwards.
